Borgo Hermada: The Rationalist Village Hosting Casa Capo dei Bufali

Before heading out to explore the area, it is worth discovering where you are staying. Borgo Hermada is a quiet hamlet of Terracina located just a few minutes by car from the sea. Founded in 1934 during the Land Reclamation of the Agro Pontino, it shares its architectural style with Sabaudia and Littoria. The heart of the village is Piazza IV Novembre, overlooked by the Church of Sant’Antonio with its distinctive pillar bell tower, the historic Rural School building, and the old Storehouse.

Every year in April, the village comes alive with the Pedagnalonga, a traditional spring walk and podistic race through the farmsteads (held since 1973!). In June, the community celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua with a solemn procession. An authentic village, far from mass tourism, serving as the ideal base to explore the best of the Riviera of Ulysses.

The Riviera of Ulysses: Myth, Cinema & History

Casa Capo dei Bufali is located in the heart of the Riviera of Ulysses, a legendary coast tied to Homer’s Odyssey and recently brought back into the global spotlight thanks to Christopher Nolan’s epic film adaptation. An authentic, unspoiled alternative to mass tourism.

A region where classical mythology seamlessly merges with breathtaking landscapes:

  • Mount Circeo and Eaea Island: The promontory’s silhouette resembles the sleeping face of the Sorceress Circe over the sea. Ancient Greek sailors identified this as the island where Ulysses’ companions were turned into swine. At the summit lie the ruins of an ancient Roman Sanctuary dedicated to Circe.
  • Terracina and the Temple of Jupiter Anxur: The land of the Laestrygonians mentioned in Book X of the Odyssey, with cliffs towering directly above the gulf.
  • Sperlonga and the Marble Odyssey: Minutes away lies Tiberius’ Villa with its natural seaside grotto and the Archaeological Museum displaying colossal statues depicting Ulysses’ adventures.
  • Sea Caves & National Park: From the Grotta delle Capre in San Felice Circeo to hidden paths through Mediterranean scrub.
